English Release Title: My Dear Marie (first release), Metal Angel (Both
released by ADV.. why'd they go and change the title, I wonder...? o_O)
Japanese Title: Boku no Marie
Show it Subbed or Dubbed? I haven't seen it dubbed, but as usual,
it's great subbed.
Comments: What I thought was really cool about this anime, but what
went unappreciated by other people that I showed it to was the previews
for next episode.. they were very cute. ^_^ This anime is light, funny,
and even a bit ecchi for the conservative viewer (opinions vary). At first,
we meet a young man who has such a crush on a girl that he makes an exact
android replica of her, down to the bra size! Things go from there, though
as usual, and relationships between characters become quite interesting.
I want more!
- It makes one laugh, and it's cute, but not in a sickening way.
When and How Did I use This? To tell the truth, I don't remember
where I was when I showed it, but I do remember the reactions: people laughed,
"awwed" and generally had a good time watching it.
English Release
Title: None, but this is currently
available fansubbed.
Japanese Title: Mahou Tsukai Tai! (I Want to use Magic! / Magic User's Club)
Show it Subbed or Dubbed? There is no commercial release of this anime to date, therefore no dub available.
Comments: This anime is not only charming, but entertaining as well.
There are some interesting gags and funny moments, along with character
that even total idiots can appreciate. Don't be fooled by its premise of
tooth-rotting cuteness (after watching the opening theme song, especially); this one's enthralling and perfect bait for your
victims.
- Interesting; no slow moments that make your "targets" turn away
When and How Did I use This? I was able to get one "test subject"
to drive friends and I to an anime convention (FanimeCon 99), where it was
showing in one of the theaters. Instant hit.
English Release Title:
Ranma 1/2
Japanese Title: Ranma Nibunnoichi
Show it Subbed or Dubbed? For beginners, either will suffice since
the dub is good, but my preference is subtitled.
Comments: One of the more popular anime series, Ranma's perfect to
show to most people that aren't familiar with anime. There's fighting for
the action-oriented, and constant comedy for ones cursed with a short attention
span. As one of my "targets" have said, "It's a kung-fu movie,
but animated! And funnier!" This is a title that I've used often to
introduce many to anime because of these attributes, and one can't go wrong
with Takahashi! *grin*
- One of the better dubbed titles
- Easy to find in places that sell/rent anime
When and How Did I use This?
1. When I was in high school some "targets" and I would come to
my house and watch Sailor Moon together. One day after it ended, I popped
this in the VCR and it went downhill from there. Ranma was also a title
that re-spawned my interest in anime among other people as well. Try to
show the first episode if at all possible.
2. I lent the first volume, subtitled, to a schoolmate of mine that ate
it all up. He begged me to bring him more, but I graduated a year before
he did and haven't seen him since. Phooey.
3. I noticed how a coworker adored a picture of Lum, and mentioned Ranma
was created by the same person. After lending her the first volume and about
six hours of it, she become more intersted in other titles as well. She
later became a victim of Shoujou Kakumei Utena (read below for details).

Utena
Japanese Title: Shoujou Kakumei Utena
Show it Subbed or Dubbed? Dear LORD, do NOT show it DUBBED. Not only
does the dub lack greatly in acting ability, but the voices just don't fit
the characters. As an added bonus to this monstrousity, the dub takes a
lot away from the aura of mystery and elegance that the original actors
give the characters.
Comments: I know very few guys that actually like this anime, however
the success that I have had with this and my female test subjects was much
better than expected. What do you expect, however, this is shoujou! This
anime is mysterious, funny at times, strange and will keep the
viewer asking questions. Again, know what's going on before showing as the
viewer will keep asking about what will happen next/what is happening.
- Highly effective on girls.
- Chuchu's (resident critter) charm alone is infectious.
When and How Did I use This?
1. Upon sparking a coworker's interest in Ranma, she wanted to leave an
art class that we both attended an hour early to come to my house to watch
more anime. This show was one of my next choices, and she immediately fell
in love with the elegance of the show, and its heroine and other characters,
despite being the hardcore punker that she is. ^_~
2. I was told to bring some movies to an all-girls party that a friend of
mine was having for her birthday. What a perfect premise! When showing this
little gem to the girls, they asked to borrow my boxed set so that they
could finish it (while watching in a hot tub).
English Release Title: Elf Princess Rane

Japanese Title: Yosei Hime Ren
Show it Subbed or Dubbed? Subbed. SUBBED!
Comments: My, GOD, this is hilarious! This show is nothing but constant
gags that will keep you rolling on the floor if you have a taste for spaz-humor,
though you need to be a speed reader since this show is very fast-paced.
This is one anime that you may want to watch one or two times (don't worry
though, you WILL want to) before showing someone, just so that you can explain
anything strange that's going on.
- Great for larger groups since laughter is contagious
When and How Did I use This?
1. During a get-together with some people that had seen Akira on Sci-Fi
and some of my Escaflowne. I brought this with me and they fell in love.
2. After isolating myself during one of my younger cousin's birthday, I
was followed by a handful of kids, ages 8 - 13, who were interested because
it was animated, and thought it was hilarious (the younger children were
surprised to hear/read animated characters swearing...). Though I DO NOT
recommend showing anime with nudity to other people's younger children,
(if I would have been caught, I would have been brought out back and severly
kicked... or something... o_o) I was surprised in finding that they did
not complain about the fast subtitles.
English Release Title: The Vision of Escaflowne
Japanese Title: Tenkuu no Escaflowne
Show it Subbed or Dubbed? I haven't seen the dub (don't plan to...), but I must say that the subbed version is magnificent.
Comments: This particular anime was the equivalent to crack for many people, myself included. I love the character/background/mech designs, love the characters, the way the story flows, and ESPECIALLY the music! Yoko Kanno is an excellent composer, and her work is no slouch here! The adventure is nonstop, and always gripping. This is one of my favorite anime (even though I have a lot of favorites, but... ^o^;) that I love to watch over and over again.
- Gripping adventure
- There's an unnamed "magic" that hooks people onto it
When and How Did I Use This?
A friend of mine was over, using my computer the night that I got my first volumes in the mail. At the end of the first tape I heard her say, "Damn! TELL me you bought more!" From that point, she hooked everybody that she could on the show (about a handful of people), and eventually, those people were breathing down my neck for more. I have yet to tell them that I've long since collected the entire series already. *Evil Grin*
